. Helped set up the
department, pitched for (and won) clients, including HSBC, Canary Wharf Group and
SavoyHotels group. Launched and subsequently edited Canary magazine in March 2000
(glossy lifestyle quarterly), HSBCPremier magazine in June 2000 (global lifestyle quarterly
with four different language versions and many localised stories) and Savoy Style magazine
in September 2001 (glossy London lifestyle triannual). As an editor I was responsible for client
liaising and translating their vision onto paper, managing client expectations, setting up look
and feel of the magazines, sourcing writers, commissioning copy and photography, editing
and writing copy, overseeing design, flatplanning, ensuring deadlines, managing budgets,
costing and managing extra projects, invoicing the client. Additional responsibilities within
the department included hiring (and sometimes firing) staff, managing the team, pitching for
new clients, enabling syndication of our stories, and reporting to company MD on department
profit and loss.
1998
The Erotic Review: contributing editor. Helped set up the design and look of the magazine
as well as editing stories and finding and commissioning new writers such as Malcolm MacLaren
and Barry Humphries.
1996-1997
Editor of London This Week, a monthly arts and events guide to the capital. Responsible for
writing, sub-editing, picture research, DTP design and layout work. Managing page plans,
setting deadlines, production schedules, liaising with repro house and printer.
Also theatre and film critic.
